We developed this idea for the project because we are avid comic readers and creators. Reading graphic novels is interesting to us because we love seeing the images to help us visualize the plot and characters. When creating graphic novels and comics, we are able to utilize our art skills while still maintaining storytelling aspects. However, as we entered intermediate grades, parents and teachers continued telling us to leave the graphic novels behind as they were “too simple” or “quick reads.” That’s when we wondered: was there any basis to this assumption?
Ancient Versus Modern Wheat: Present Day Consumers Dilemma to Good Health
Wheat is a cereal grain, that has a great impact on human nutrition and health. It is a major source of proteins, carbohydrates, and dietary fibers. At present there is considerable interest in the ancient wheats that were present in the Fertile-crescent and then naturally hybridized to give rise to the modern day allohexaploid wheat. The modern wheat varieties have been further improved by plant breeding techniques to develop varieties with improved agronomic traits such as yield and desirable bread making qualities.
Finding Antagonistic Bacteria to Control Verticillium dahliae
Verticillium dahliae is a common soil-borne fungal plant pathogen that causes early senescence in tubers, affecting the quality and yield of potato crops. Currently, farmers with worries of Verticillium infection are fumigating their fields with chemicals that eradicate the fungus. Chemical fumigation is neither an economic solution, nor is it environmentally friendly. This project studies economic and environmentally friendly options for controlling V. dahliae. The objective of this project is to find a microbial organism that has an antagonistic relationship with fungi Verticillium dahliae in potatoes to be used as biocontrol.
The Science of Skiing: The Effect of Terrain, Gender and Orthotics on Quadriceps Load
The purpose of this project was to determine if there will be more load on the quadriceps when skiing a mogul run than when skiing a groomed run. This project also examines if those with a higher Q-angle (typically females), would experience greater quadriceps load. In addition, it investigates if the use of orthotics could reduce Q-angle and therefore reduce quadriceps load. A better understanding of the science of skiing may help my family avoid injury.

A Novel Filtration System Using Natural Materials
Carpet Lifting Machine Innovation
My objective is to design and build an innovative machine to reduce overall labor in lifting, rolling and moving eight 4x16m 100kg gymnastics carpets. I was a national level rhythmic gymnast. In the past 30 years, the Chinook Gymnastics Club has been using two dollies to lift and transport big and heavy gymnastic carpets daily before and after training. I have seen parents sweating and heard gymnasts complaining about the old dollies. There must be a better way to do this labor effortlessly.
