Four biomimetic wings were designed, 3D printed, and tested in order to determine superior lift, drag, efficiency, and stall performance. In addition to a control wing, three designs were based on the unique evolutionary adaptations of birds and whales: modifications were incorporated to create an avian airfoil, an avian blended winglet design, and sinusoidal protrusions inspired by cetacean morphology.
The common synthetic fertilizer’s ability to increase nitrate levels is mitigated by the leaching of nitrate into aquatic ecosystems and waterways; this contamination eventually causes eutrophication and pollutes groundwater (Dubey & Townsend, 2004). Synthetic fertilizer application has also been a contributor to increased nitrous oxide emissions (Sanders, 2012). A novel solution is using black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) frass as organic fertilizer.
It is quite common for individuals to take over the counter pain medications for muscle aches, headaches, and discomfort, however not all over the counter medications are created equal. This investigation was designed to determine which over the counter medications dissolved the fastest in simulated gastric acid.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease that accounts for 10-15% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes and usually occurs in childhood or young adulthood (Atkinson et. al 2013). T1DM is characterized by the autoimmune destruction of insulin-secreting β cells located within islets of Langerhans — regions of the pancreas that contain its endocrine cells (Atkinson et al. 2014). T1DM may result in secondary complications such as cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy. Some of these complications may be life-threatening even when blood glucose levels are well controlled. A potential treatment option for T1DM is islet transplantation where islets of Langerhans are isolated from a donor pancreas and transplanted into patients (Shapiro et al. 2006).
