What is the purpose of your invention?
The purpose of my invention is to remove garbage from the ocean. The scooper only collects garbage, not oil.
How does your invention work?
The garbage scoopers go in the water, so that they can pick up the garbage in the ocean. There is a scanner that scans the garbage in the scoops. If the scoops are full, they automatically raise and wait for a garbage collecting boat to come to collect the garbage. Once the scoops are empty again, they will automatically go back into the water.
What are the main components/features of your invention?
The scoopers are made of iron and there are bags hooked on to the scoopers. One VERY IMPORTANT thing: there is a stop lever. If there is a problem – either the scoops get too full or something is broken – you can pull the lever to stop the garbage scooper from moving. It will be stopped until it is reset.
What does your invention look like?
How do you think you could measure the impact of your project?
To measure the impact there is a sensor that is connected to your phone and it tells you if the scooper is working well. The app can also tell you how much the garbage weighs, so you will know when the scooper is full. This data is collected so you can know how much garbage has been collected over time.
What issues inspired your invention?
My invention was inspired because people litter. Litter can sometimes get into rivers as well, which contaminates drinking water AND the ocean! Fish and other sea life can die if we litter and the oceans will become polluted.
Why are these issues important to you?
These problems are important to me because we need to make the world a better place for animals to life and for all people to have a great place to live.
What can people do every day to help with these issues?
People should not litter, and need to put their trash in the garbage or recycling. People can also reduce the amount of garbage they made by reusing things.
ABOUT THE INVENTOR
My name is Ella and I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I am 9 years old, and I am in grade 3. I have a little sister who is 3 years old. I like to play video games and read comics and play tabletop games. My favourite foods are pizza, tacos, ice cream, and fudge. We also have family on the east coast that we don’t get to see that much right now. My favourite trip was when we went to Las Vegas for a board game convention and it was very fun. I like to listen to the songs Legends Never Die, Dynomite, and Girls Like You. I like to go scootering with my dad but he rides on his bike. I like to draw food and people. When we go to the beach in our community, I like to use a big inflatable floaty.
