In our Native Language Class, our teacher often tells us stories about our people’s connections to the land. We were taught about the First Nations’ special relationship with the earth and all living things in it. Our relationship with the land is not ownership but one of stewardship or management.
Edible insects are a recent food trend in North America but have been consumed for generations around the globe. This novel food source could be an option to meet increasing demand for protein for human consumption. Given the rising cost of animal protein, environmental pressures of producing meat and increasing human populations, van Huis et al. (2013) determined “edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat”.
The purpose of this study is to determine weather trends in Winnipeg over a seventy year period, and relate this data to climate change. Specifically, this work aims to determine the number of days above 0°C in the seventy year period for the winter months of December, January, and February, as well as the number of days below 0°C in the same time period. The study of temperatures in Winnipeg is an illustration of how vulnerable the prairies are to climate change. It is a warning, which has both immediate and long-term implications for the environment, as well as economic and social stability for Winnipeg, Manitoba, the prairies, Canada and the world itself.
The purpose of this project was to understand how cranberry flavonoids interact with tubulin disruptors and DNA synthesis inhibitors against cancer cells. I also aimed to understand how cancer drug resistance impacts the efficacy of drug combinations with cranberry flavonoids.
s a 4-H poultry member, I identified a need for better container options to ship day old chicks. The mail order chick industry is based on the fact that chicks can meet their water and nutrition requirements for up to three days from the time they are hatched without supplementation; they have a yolk sack which can provide all their needs for the first three days of life (Bowes, 2017). Although the mail order chick industry reports mortality rates of about 2% (McMurray, 2017), anecdotal reports (Ohm, 2014; Wickens, 2017) and my personal experience suggest that the mortality rate may be much higher. When I order poultry that is shipped via postal or courier service by truck or plane, the chicks often arrive cold, underweight or trampled.
Biofluorescence in marine fish is a recently discovered phenomenon (Sparks et al., 2014), but has not been studied in freshwater fish. In this study, 128 specimens of freshwater biota from 12 locations around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay were photographed under ultraviolet light. It was discovered that biofluorescence is widespread across freshwater taxonomic families and species. The discovery of these fluorescent pigments is important to developing biomedical imaging technology.
The science and art of backyard composting is one essential skill that is forgotten nowadays by most people. In the O-Chi-Chak-Ko-Sipi First Nation, we hardly heard of households still producing organic fertilizers in the traditional way. This project compared the effect of different worm juice dilutions and water on the growth of canola seeds which were planted in our vermicast enriched community soil.
The purpose of this experiment was to identify the most accurate lead(s) for QT interval measurements on a standard 12-lead electrocardiograph (EKG). The population of subjects for this experiment were women between 18 and 50 years of age who presented an EKG that was interpreted as normal by a qualified cardiologist. After reading through similar studies, an analytical method was devised. (Davey, 2000) The ultimate goal of this project was to improve protocol for obtaining QT interval measurements in the specified demographic and indirectly increase the diagnosis rate of LQTS to allow physicians to educate patients and take other steps to help prevent SCA.
Brian Oakley, a young father and construction worker from Victoria, BC in Canada sustained a spinal fracture while working on a job site. He was unloading a trailer when the truck shifted, causing nearly 300 kilograms of glass to fall on him, pinning him to the ground. Oakley was rushed to Victoria General Hospital and later transferred to Vancouver General Hospital for a spinal fusion by a surgeon at the top of his field. He survived the surgery, but despite excellent response times and the surgeon’s best efforts, the young father was paralyzed from the neck down due to a vertebral breach – accidental damage to the spinal cord – that occurred during the surgical procedure.
Growing plants in Newfoundland is a difficult task due to a short growing season, suboptimal temperatures and poor quality of the native soil (Ricketts, 1987). Newfoundland soil is known to be quite acidic and excessively stoney so there is very quick drainage of water and nutrients (Herigna, 1981). Any potential fertilizer attempting to enrich the native Newfoundland soil will have to address these challenges. In this project, various combinations of organic waste will be used to enhance the native Newfoundland soil.
Given the growth of human population throughout the world, the amount of food required to feed everyone is of great importance, particularly in third world countries. This challenge is more acute when there is the need to have not only a sufficient amount of food, but also to have food which contains all the necessary nutrition for healthy eating. Canada has an important role to play with meeting this global requirement since nearly two-thirds of the world’s supply of protein rich pulse crops is produced in Saskatchewan alone [Szalay, J.].
The purpose of this project is to help schools by providing them with a resource-intensive reporting and tracing system for students who are being bullied or bullying others, by means of a strategically developed web application. This system can help a victim and/or their parents/guardians by allowing them to confidentially report a bullying incident. It would also help a bully’s parents be aware of and better understand the unacceptable nature of their children’s actions.
